Senior Backend / Database Engineer

What are we looking for

In this role you are expected to be one of the backend and database wizards of the company. This means possessing the skills to optimize and scale our backend services for speed and robustness, improve database queries, security policies and develop new backend solutions.

Depending on the day, you might work on high-performance backends, dive deep into PostgreSQL performance, build integrations using ETL pipelines, REST and GraphQL APIs, and tailor-made data-structures and algorithms.

Requirements

At Seaber we work primarily with Typescript, NodeJS, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, HTTP, WebSockets, Docker and Amazon Web Services.

You’ll need to be:

• Experienced with PostgreSQL, PL/pgSQL, Nodejs, Typescript, GraphQL and REST

• Comfortable with one or more of the following: C++, C, Go, Rust or other compile to native languages (Zig, Nim, Odin, Carbon, Crystal, Julia, Kotlin, D, V, OCaml etc.)

• Creative & analytical approach, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

• Deep understanding of Web Services, Internet protocols and architecture, SQL, and software development in general.

• Self-motivated and self-managed with a high degree of dependability.

Considered a plus:

• Deep understanding of indexing, the query planner, and execution in PostgreSQL

• History of significant performance improvements in software

• Significant contributions to open-source software

• PhD/MSc in software engineering, computer science, mathematics or physics

• Experience with correct-by-construction software development / proof assistants (Isabelle, Agda, Coq, Lean, F* etc)

• Experience in mathematical optimisation and modelling for Operations Research (especially in the vehicle routing problem or pickup and delivery problem)

• Scientific publications

This role is preferably based in Finland, but we do consider applications from the EU as well, so you need to have an EU passport or already have a valid work permit that would allow you to work in EU or Finland.
